A few years ago there was this idea doing the rounds that Google had invented software where their machines would tell you what you were looking at via your camera phone. So the story went that you could be in the wild and see a plant or a bird and Google would let you know what it was. It was a hoax!

Anyway it reminded me of this photo I took in Tate Modern (London) I didn’t know what the sculpture was, and I imagined that the person taking the photo (in the photo) was sending an image to Google to ask them if they knew. If there was such a thing as recognition software what would it make of an abstract work of art?
